TechTool Pro has long been one of the foremost utilities for keeping your Mac running smoothly and efficiently. With the release of version 11, it has become more proficient than ever. Main features:.
TechTool Protection - TechTool Pro 11 includes the option of installing a system preference pane to keep watch over your Mac. New features include check for I/O errors, Power On Self-Test errors, Mac notebook internal battery condition, and RAID status (if applicable). It also includes the same improvements to the SMART check in TechTool Pro. All of that, wrapped in an entirely new interface. Check Computer - Check Computer is a handy way to tell TechTool Pro to run the entire suite of tests to give you the best possible snapshot of your Mac's health. Sometimes, though, it's nice to be able to leave tests out, or to skip certain drives. Using the new configuration panel, you have total control of the Check Computer suite.
Power to the people. Partition Map - TechTool Pro has long been known for testing your Mac's file system. It is important also to test the data structures that contain the Mac's file system: the Partition Map. The new Partition Map test checks the partition map of a given drive for errors. Partition map errors can cause entire volumes to go missing, or prevent a Mac from booting.
If errors are found, they can be repaired usin the Partition Repair tool. Partition Repair - Along with Volume Rebuild, which repairs Mac file systems, the Partition Repair tool repairs the remaining portions of the drive which keeps track of the volumes on your hard drive. This includes hidden partitions which keep track of your Mac's startup process. The Partition Repair tool does just what it says, repairing the partition maps or drives where needed.
SMART Check - Hard drives include a technology called SMART (Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) which can inform a computer about the health of its hard drives. In most utilities, just the overall results - passed or failed - are reported to the user.
In the failed state, often there is little or no time to back up data before the drive fails entirely. Previous versions of TechTool Pro reported the overall status of each attribute, but some attributes don't contribute to the failure of a drive.
Now, the SMART Check has gotten smarter. TechTool Pro now knows which attributes contribute to drive failure, and will report a failing result before the drive fails completely. Giving you time to rescue your data. Memory Test - TechTool Pro 7 took a revolutionary step in testing memory, making TechTool Pro's memory testing suite the most comprehensive test available for the Mac. In TechTool Pro 10, we've taken some of the additional advancements used by ATOMIC, our dedicated Memory Tester, and integrated them into TechTool Pro. Now, memory is 'cleaned' before testing, reclaimed from macOS, maximizing the amount of RAM that can be tested. Processor Benchmark - Get an objective measurement of your Mac's processor performance.
The Processor Benchmark too uses industry-standard measurement algorithms to test processor performance. Using this tool, you can get metrics that can be used to compare processor speeds apples-to-apples.
Avoids the confusion of comparison using Megahertz. Bluetooth - Most Macs depend on Bluetooth to connect to the tools we use to interact with our computers: the keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth problems can result in dropped connections with those devices, which can be very frustrating. Verify the proper operation of your Mac's Bluetooth hardware. Make sure that not only your input devices, but also your audio and fitness devices can connect to your Mac by checking the Bluetooth hardware on your Mac.
Network Interfaces - Most Macs spend the majority of their lives connected to the internet. If the ethernet or wifi adapters in your Mac aren't working, the valuable connection to the internet can fail. The new Network Interfaces test can test any connected network interface for errors.
It not only tests ethernet and wifi, but also any other supported internet connection, ethernet over USB, VPN connections, even a FireWire network conneciton. Ensure the reilability of your internet and intranet connections by testing your Mac's network interfaces.Note: to read all the features that are available in this app visit. What's new in TechTool Pro.
Version 11.0.5:Mojave Compatibility:. Added support for MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019) and MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports). Added support in the SMART Check test for unformatted SMART enabled drives. Fixed a Dark mode issue in the Data Recovery window. Updates to the Bonjour database for the Local Network tool.
Updated location and machine identification strings for Check Computer. Other minor fixes and enhancements.Security Features:. macOS Mojave introduces a number of new security features to keep you safe. In order for applications like Techtool Pro to have access to perform tests and repairs of certain disks, they must be granted 'Full Disk Access.' Techtool Pro 11 now supports this security feature helping to keep your Mac secure.Home Permissions Tool:.
If you are being asked to enter your password to move files in your home folder, if apps that store documents in your home folder quit unexpectedly, or your Mac continues to run slowly after extensive troubleshooting, you may have permissions problems in your home folder. Techtool Pro 11 introduces a new tool to reset the permissions in your home folder to restore home folder performance.Updated Technologies:. Previous versions of Techtool Pro had to make certain compromises to support earlier versions of macOS. With Techtool Pro 11, we have been able to take advantage of more advanced methods to perform many of the tasks that make up the functionality in Techtool Pro. We have updated many of the tests and tools to use these technologies to keep your Mac running smoothly. Results on the go:.
Techtool Pro supports iCloud Drive. Simply download the new Techtool Remote iOS app (free on the App Store), and open it.
Techtool Pro will then send test results to any iOS device logged in to the same iCloud account. So if you have a long test (or tests) running that you want to know the results of, but you need to hit the road, you can now get notified of your results anywhere you have an internet connection. This app rocks!
I use an SSD and Catalina, though they say the current edition does not 'Totally support Catalina' I use it constantly and it is my #1 standby Drive utility. Vastly better than DriveGenius 5 or the new 6. In Mohave 5 and 6 will report falsely of disk damage and neither of those support Catalina and seem to have no immediate plans to do so. TechTool support treats you like a human and never makes you feel like an idiot or that you are bothering them. Yes file optimization works.you simply have to create am bootable partition use it and TechTool is fully operational.
The app even tells you so if you try to do anything with the Startup drive. The Bootable portion is created quickly with no effort on your part.
You simply designate where you want the Bootable partition created and the rest is automatic. Just a word of caution for potential new purchasers of TechTool Pro.While TechTool Pro can do volume rebuilds on APFS formatted volumes and disks, as of version 11.0.4, both File Optimization and Volume Optimization still do NOT work on APFS volumes and disks. While Apple has long claimed that file optimization has become meaningless in light of modern huge hard drives and fast machines, some Mac users still like to optimize anyway. If you are one of such people, and if you do use APFS, then please be aware of this point before making a purchase. Partial Review:v11.0.3 still has some minor bugs.
The most annoying is when your Preferences chosen are RESET to the DEFAULT without your permission. In my case, I do NOT want Directory Backup OR Volume Usage OR Trash History left on. Upon Restart it is common for all three of these settings to be checked ON again. I’ll have to dig further to understand why this happens. But my best guess is that these settings are (wrongly) stored in User Cache rather than in a PLIST permissions file. If/when I dump my User Cache appears to be when this bug enacts itself. Also, there have been reports of problems creating eDrives (a temporary bootable partition for repairing native Mac boot partitions).

I still have to check if the bugs have been removed in 11.0.3.Overall, despite the minor bugs, TTP 11 is impressive. It remains (sadly) the ONLY disk repair utility that can (mostly) repair APFS volumes. DiskWarrrior still cannot, with no sign of progress. Drive Genius still cannot, with no sign of progress.WHY the interminable lack of full support for APFS in any Mac utility??? The blame goes to Apple. Inexplicably, Apple is being lazy, not finished APFS documentation to developers.
This annoyingly fits with Apple's recent Mac malaise, now extending to over three years since APFS was announced and its first beta provided. Developers are uniformly fed up with this specific lack of support from Apple.IOW: Don't blame Micromat or the other repair utility providers. Thank Micromat for striving forward with actual APFS repair support, despite Apple. I generally do not leave bad reviews as I have had to deal with several bad reviews on Yelp for my business so I get the damage it can do to some companies.Anyway when I bought TechTool Pro 10 and tried to install it for the first time, I got the message many got when they were trying to use TechTool Pro 10 with a fully updated OS computer.' TechTool Pro 10 (version number) is not fully compatible with your mac OSX (version number)'I contacted support to ask them if it was normal and was told it was not and that a fix should be out soon. A week later, TechTool Pro 11 came out.
I asked the company again when a fix was coming and was now told that I needed to update and pay for Version 11.Now, let me be clear.I understand a company doesnt have to offer the next version for free.but it seems rather common business sense that if a brand new customer buys a version of your product and is having issues with it, you can give him the next version that came out 5 days after his purchase that by the way does fix the issue at hand. So, they won't be getting my business again.I emailed MicroMat asking if I could get the next version and was never emailed back. Every responsible developer provides a free upgrade to the next version of their software if their older version was recently purchased. Whatever 'recently' means is up to the developer. But if you seriously bought TTP 10 a mere 5 days ago, and they're not giving you v11, and you need v11, it's time to PESTER MICROMAT. Here's how:1) The Micromat Forum:Micromat @Twitter:friendly but persistent. I like the company.
But this sounds very wrong. Another version of TechTool Pro and another upgrade fee. This is version 11. Many will not like this, given all the other upgrade fee's we've paid reccently. But, at long last, TTP is completely compatible with macOS 10.14, Mojave. There are a number of additional features that I've not yet tested, so I cannot give it a full review.
Except to say that it repeatedly asks for full disk access, even after you've granted it. If you haven't been going along with the upgrade schedule, this one will cost you more, up to $59 from old versions of ttp. There's a whole schedule of upgrade charges, depending on which version you're using. But if you are using Mojave, and need TechTool Pro, there is little choice at this point. I believe ttp is the first major maintenance utility to be fully compatible with 10.14. Contrary to the comment below, Micromat nor any other vendor provides full APFS repair support.
Apple has not provided vendors with sufficient technical documentation to provide otherwise. Take note about what Micromat itself says:'APFS support status with the release of MojaveIt is understandable to conclude that Mojave support and APFS support would mean the same thing. However, the operating system and the file system are, in fact, distinct from one another.
While the operating system serves as the 'window' for interacting with drives in many ways, there is no API for dealing with the disk directly. The current documentation from Apple does not include sufficient information to write a tool to defragment APFS volumes. The extent of the documentation on the subject so far is a feature flag labeled NXFEATUREDEFRAG which indicates whether an APFS container supports defragmentation. If Apple releases additional documentation that provides sufficient information for manipulating the data directly on disk, we will explore whether a defragmentation feature is feasible for.rotational. APFS drives. Defragmentation on Solid State Drives in the traditional sense will not be supported, as organizing data on solid state devices only serves to increase wear, and provides no performance benefit.Likewise, while the Volume Rebuild can repair many drives with volume structures problems, a full rebuild that reorganizes the volume structures can only be implemented once Apple provides further documentation.'
