Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a resident trapped on a third-storey balcony as black smoke from a two-alarm filled an apartment building on Elgin Street on Friday morning.Firefighters were summoned at 7:40 a.m. By two 911 calls reporting visible smoke on the top floor.One person was taken to hospital by paramedics as firefighters worked to contain the flames to one unit at 404 Elgin St., just south of Gladstone Avenue.That resident will be displaced, the fire department said, and another unit may be uninhabitable because of smoke damage.OC Transpo sent a bus to the scene so that residents could shelter from the heat. The Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army also offered help.Firefighters cleared smoke from the building, then had to start full decontamination procedures because of the risk that the old building might contain asbestos.They rinsed tools and personal protective equipment and removed and bagged their gear after changing into Tyvek suits to reduce the risk of being exposed to contaminants and spreading them to fire vehicles.The cause of the fire and an estimate of damage weren’t available Friday.Fire at 404 Elgin St. Friday Scott Stilborn /Ottawa Fire Photos.
